Tiger Woods PGA 2013 Collector’s Edition
TWPGA 2013CE is significantly different to TW2012, and is definitely not everybody’s cup of tee. However, if you love playing golf and manage to get past all the frustrating bits, you’re sure to enjoy every last bit of it. In fact, it’s pretty much this frustration that kept me playing and trying to meet the challenges of the new features.

There are a number of new features introduced to Tiger Woods PGA 2013. The first of these are the addition of 20 new courses. Under normal circumstances, it takes a long time to play the game and get through all challenges and different levels of the different golf courses, so to some extent, including 20 new courses seems a bit redundant. I have similar feelings of redundancy about the creation of “your own online golf club”. It’s an additional feature that detracts you from going through the different levels on the ‘Road to the Masters’.
The Tiger Woods Legacy challenge is a third new feature built around significant moments in Tiger Woods’ golfing career, from his earliest days as a toddler all throughout his career. Many of these highlights are locked and have to be unlocked by completing the different challenges in chronological order. This is time-consuming but very interesting feature. In playing these challenges, I learnt a number of things about Tiger Woods that I didn’t know (thankfully none of it involves any of his mistresses).
In TW 2012 there are pre-selected shots resulting in ‘automated’ / ‘pre-selected’ distances. In this regard one could swing as hard as you like with the ball only travelling as far as the ‘automated’ distance. So when if you found yourself on the greens there was a power bar that assisted with how hard you should putt based on where you are aiming. Which brings me to the fourth and the most significant new feature, TSC (Total Swing Control). I found this to be the best, yet most frustrating, feature. There are no longer ‘pre-selected’ distances, allowing you to swing as hard as you want to instead. There is also no power bar when putting on the greens. And if you’re used to playing TW 2012, this will be a huge challenge to overcome / get used to. It was difficult to figure out how far back to go on the backswing, how fast to come through on the downswing, which plane to come down on and how far to go on the follow through for the different shots. TSC means that one can no longer haphazardly swing your club and still get fairly good results, but it instead forces you to simulate an actual golf swing. This is definitely something that real golfers will enjoy.
I was a bit disappointed when I imported my player profile from TW 2012 into 2013, since I basically had to restart my career from scratch. The fact that my previous achievements were at least acknowledged with XP50000 (points) – a small consolation.
The lack of assistance in TW 2013 is annoying, especially when trying to understand the onscreen displays. It’s also not easy to get the same kind of interaction between player and caddy as there was in TW 2012. Having said this, the navigation around the game is fairly easy and perhaps simpler than ever before. The graphics of TW 2013 is a marginal improvement on its predecessor but nevertheless fantastic.
If you love playing PS3, if you love playing golf, if you’re married and if you have an addictive nature, then this game is bad in a good way!
