Story: A gang of thugs have committed an unspeakable crime and detective Walter Bolt is assigned to the case. Bolt hides a secret and the only one who knows about it is the also the only man that can bring the criminals to justice and that man is Frank Castle a.k.a, The Punisher.
Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto deliver a superb first edition. New readers and long time aficionados should be pleased with this release. Frank Castle’s grim back story is summed up briefly and adeptly in the opening pages. From here he meanders in and out of the main story like a shadow, with the bulk of the action focusing on Bolt. The few times Castle does appear, it is with minimal dialogue which seems to add to his menacing presence as well as to his singular, maniacal mission of vengeance.
The panels flow smoothly and long wordless sequences are employed to maximum effect, aided by the dark and broody, 70s inspired crime-thriller artwork. The action feels real and it’s bloody too, so be warned. The story is wrapped in mystery, making one a bit confused but like a good crime novel it makes for compelling reading.
